Elegant Swedish art deco armchair with a graceful scrolled back raised on sabre back legs. The chair is solid stained Elm and features a cantilevered platform seat with upholstered cushion. Produced by Wilhelm Knoll, Malmo, 1933. Newly refinished in excellent condition and newly upholstered.

English Aesthetic Movement, Mahogany armchair with suede seat.

A refined, hand carved mahogany armchair of the Aesthetic Movement with a seat upholstered in green suede. Elements of the chair’s design anticipate the near future Jugendstil and Art Nouveau styles. No element of this chair is ordinary including the leg braces, sabots and back rest. Newly restored with new suede.

The Aesthetic Movement in Britain (1860 – 1900) aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, by focusing instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning – 'Art for Art's sake'. The artists and designers in this 'cult of beauty' crafted some of the most sophisticated and sensuously beautiful artworks of the Western tradition and in the process remade the domestic world of the British middle-classes.

Aesthetic designs reference Asian, Egyptian, Greek, vernacular, and even delicate 18-century English examples.

Literature, painting, and the decorative arts were all influence by the movement. Artists included, Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, James McNeill Whistler, and Romaine Brooks

A fine pair of Swedish art deco elm wood lounge chairs detail with strips of mahogany veneer. This pair is a very nice scale with perfectly pitched backrest. Newly restored and upholstered with a nubby fabric in neutral colors. Designed by David Blomberg and made by Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm, circa 1930.

Axel Larsson "Funkis" modernist armchair for SFM Bodafors, 1930

An early 1930’s Swedish modernist armchair designed by Axel Larson for S.F.M. Bodafors. Made of stained solid birch, the gracefully carved arms are beautiful as well as functional. The back and seat are newly upholstered in leather with a printed abstract pattern.

Towards to the end of the “Swedish Grace” period, designers many of which were architects, turned their attention to the furniture which would furnish homes in the new urban neighborhoods in Sweden’s cities. This “Funkis” or functional design movement explored lighter weight furniture which was in scale with modern apartment living.

"Funkis" style ignored historical period styles of the past. Pieces as this Larson chair, redefined what a chair could be as it subtly references modern art movements of that time which included cubism, constructivism & Bauhaus. The chair’s angled back, sweeping arches serve two functions one as arms and the other as a support structure. This new approach to furniture design was considered radical at the time.

CARL GUSTAF HIORT AF ORNÄS 1940s armchair for Hiort Tuote Puunveisto, Finland.

Finnish interior architect, Carl Gustaf Hiort Af Ornäs designed modernist 1940s armchair with a high rounded back, detailed with a rolled edge. Four solid stained wood wedge shaped legs provided a sculpture like base to the chair. Produced at Hiort Tuote Puunveisto, Finland which was founded by Hiort Af Ornäs in 1945. This early piece was part of a small production run at the workshop.

Carl-Johan Boman exceptionally rare "Fexible Chair" circa 1930 made for N. Bomanin at Höyrypuusepäntehdas, Turku, Finland. The chair features a cantilever seat and is constructed from solid and bent birch with a walnut brown stain. The seat cushion has been newly upholstered in medium brown suede, the wood frame newly refinished. This chair model was created in a limited number of approximately 20 pieces. The maker Höyrypuusepäntehdas is noted for producing furniture for Eliel Saarinen.

Lars Israel Wahlman architect designed pair of high back oak, Swedish Arts and Crafts period chairs

Lars Israel Wahlman was one of Sweden’s premier architects and designers of the early 20th century - a time known for the Swedish Arts & Crafts period. Wahlman’s works are more specifically considered part of the “National Romantic style” which found inspiration in the natural world as well as in Nordic mythology, folklore, and Scandinavian vernacular styles. The Engelbrekt Church, which is in Stockholm, is one of Wahlman’s masterpieces as is Tjolöholm Castle in Hallland.

This elegant pair of carved oak armchairs is a fine example of the work he created for his client’s homes. Architectural, yet very much in human scale and proportions, the chairs’ double spire-like details add a light touch to the sturdy frames. Other carved details show restraint, as with the gentle scroll armrest, along with the simple carved lines and cutouts. These chairs are in original condition, having been waxed and with newly upholstered seats and back panels.
